NOH MASK

 

      Masks in often utilised in Noh performances and masks used in Noh performances varies from designs and purposes. Initially, there were 60 types of noh masks but today, there is close to 200 kinds of masks in used.

 

   Wearing a noh mask allows the performers to feel the existence of certain power in it which makes it different from normal props which purpose was just to change ones appearance. 

 

      There is this process where performers have to choose their noh mask carefully which is also known as a noh-men or omote. Masks will not be predetermined most of the times, but it depends on what kind of shows is being presented and this allow the performers to choose accordingly. In the end, it is up to the performers to make the final decision of choosing which mask. It is extremely important for one to choose the right mask, so as to make the whole show a successful one. In order to create a successful show in Noh theatre, performers will have to get into the character of the mask that they chose.
